Why Your Curls Look Different Every Season

If you've ever felt like your curls have a mind of their own depending on the month, you're not imagining it. The same wash-and-go that looked effortless in July can feel like a losing battle by January. That's not a routine failure , it's your hair responding to the air around it, and here in Edmonton, that air changes *a lot*.

Summer: Humidity's Push and Pull

Warm, humid air pumps extra moisture into every strand. For a lot of curl types, that means more bounce, more definition, more of that "my curls just did that themselves" look. But too much moisture and your cuticle swells past the point of control, frizz creeps in, and curls that were tight and springy start to loosen and separate.

What helps: lighter, water-based leave-ins and a gel or cream with real hold. You want moisture *and* a seal, not just moisture.

Winter: Edmonton's Dry Air Problem

This is where Edmonton curls really earn their stripes. Cold outdoor air holds almost no moisture, and indoor heating sucks out what little is left. The result is hair that feels straw-like, static-prone, and reluctant to hold a curl pattern at all, even with the same products that worked fine in August.

Dry hair also grabs onto product differently. What felt like the right amount of gel in summer can sit on the surface in winter and read as buildup, weighing curls down instead of defining them.

What helps: creams layered *before* your gel, a humidifier if you can swing it, and pulling back on how often you're using clarifying shampoo, dry curls need less stripping, not more.

Spring and Fall: The In-Between Months

These transition seasons are sneaky. Your scalp and hair are still adjusting to whatever extreme came before, so a routine that felt dialed-in a few weeks ago can suddenly feel off. This is usually when people assume something's "wrong" with their curls, when really it's just catch-up time.

What helps: patience, and a willingness to swap products in and out with the weather instead of sticking to one routine year-round.

The Real Takeaway

Your curl pattern isn't broken when it shifts with the seasons, it's just doing what hair does when the air around it changes. The goal isn't finding one perfect product lineup forever. It's building a small seasonal toolkit and giving yourself permission to adjust.

If your curls have been feeling off lately, that's usually a sign it's time for a product and routine refresh, not a sign to give up on them. A Curl Maintain session is a good way to reset for the season, we'll look at what your hair actually needs right now, not what it needed six months ago.
